The Last Goodbye Act I - Lucille "The Banshee" Ellison

The Last Goodbye is a pulp thriller running on the Goldsource engine. In the Gothic metropolis of Prava, the gun-for-hire Lucille - better known on the streets as The Banshee - takes a job from enigmatic entrepreneur Ark McLean. Her target: Bullseye, the deadliest gangster in town. On her travels through the criminal underworld she meets all manner of friends and foes, with plenty of action and intrigue along the way.

The main character of TLG had to perfectly encapsulate and represent the game as a whole. A mixture of film noir glamour and 1960s pulp adventure combined with a real sense of danger and cruelty. Her main outfit's colour scheme (blue, black and gold) is reflected across the whole of Act I, from the environments to the UI.

Like with a lot of TLG's design work, Lucille was a composite of several sources – her likeness was based on actress Ava Gardner (best known for films like The Killers and The Barefoot Contessa), her catsuit was based on Emma Peel (Diana Rigg) during her early episodes of The Avengers in 1965. The final touch was makeup inspired by postpunk Goth singer Siouxsie Sioux. She was the first character model created during pre-production and received several touch-ups throughout development.

The character had to be glamorous and striking but not defined by sex appeal, which would be crass and distracting. It was a tricky balance to find, and ultimately what decided the tone was heavily referencing real-world fashion to ground everything. Technical limitations also played a part, particularly in asset fidelity. Details like jewellery, embroidery and translucent materials had to be kept to a minimum for such a low-poly model to remain readable. Simple shapes and distinct colours were key.
